Flags — the flag quiz with 195 countries

What the Flags mode is

A flag quiz over the 195 UN member and observer states. Each round shows ten flags in random order. For every flag you have up to three attempts: three points for the first, two for the second, one for the third. After a wrong attempt you get the continent as a hint, after a second one the capital. Thirty points is a perfect round.

You type the name of the country; a suggestion list helps with spelling, and both English and German names count, as do common short forms. Flags are told apart properly: a guess that exactly names a different country is wrong even when the names are similar, so Niger and Nigeria, Austria and Australia, Iceland and Ireland stay distinct.

Questions and answers

Where do the flags and country names come from?
From Wikidata, the structured-data project behind Wikipedia: names in English and German, common alternative names, capitals and continents. The flag images are the SVG files of the open-source flag-icons project, served from this site rather than a third party.
Which countries are included?
The 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine: 195 flags in total. Territories and dependencies are not included.
Does the flag quiz store anything or contact a server?
It runs entirely in your browser. Your current round, your best score and the flags you have already seen are kept in this browser only; nothing is sent anywhere.
