The answer
Easter Island
Chile · South America, Oceania
About this place
This remote island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean is one of humanity's greatest archaeological enigmas, famous for its nearly 1,000 towering moai statues created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO recognized its extraordinary cultural significance by designating it a World Heritage Site, with most of the island now protected within Rapa Nui National Park. Today, about 4,800 people live on this Chilean territory, the only place in Polynesia where Spanish is an official language, while the ancient statues continue to inspire wonder and speculation about the civilization that created them.
Geography
Easter Island lies in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, forming the far southeastern corner of the Polynesian Triangle within Oceania. Administered as a special territory of Chile, it sits far from any continental coastline, giving it a remote insular character. Its small population, numbering only a few thousand residents, reflects this isolation. As part of both South America and insular Oceania, it bridges two very different geographic and cultural worlds within a single volcanic landscape.
History
The island's identity was shaped by the early Rapa Nui people, who carved almost a thousand massive stone figures known as moai across the landscape. These monuments became the defining legacy of the island's past, expressing the skill and beliefs of its Polynesian settlers. Recognition of this heritage came when UNESCO declared the island a World Heritage Site, and today much of its territory falls under the protection of a dedicated national park safeguarding these ancient creations.
Notable features
Easter Island is best known for its extraordinary collection of moai, nearly a thousand monumental stone figures carved by the Rapa Nui. It stands out in Polynesia as the only place where Spanish holds official status, a mark of its political ties to Chile. Much of the island is preserved within a protected national park, and its UNESCO World Heritage status underscores its global cultural significance.
