How it opened
I am a living monument visible from the heavens, built brick by brick by creatures smaller than a grain of sand.
The five clues
- 01Billions of architects have labored for millennia to construct the world's largest structure made by life itself.
- 02I stretch across the Coral Sea, separated from the Queensland coast by a channel deeper than a twenty-story building is tall.
- 03UNESCO recognized my significance in 1981, and CNN counted me among Earth's seven natural wonders two decades later.
- 04I am composed of over 2,900 individual reef systems and 900 islands, spanning more than 2,300 kilometers across 344,400 square kilometers.
- 05Located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, I am a coral reef system so vast I can be observed from outer space.
The answer
Great Barrier Reef
Australia · Oceania
About this place
This underwater kingdom off Queensland's coast is the world's largest coral reef system, built by trillions of tiny coral polyps working in concert over thousands of years. Stretching over 2,300 kilometers and covering an area larger than many countries, it supports an astounding diversity of marine life and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1981. From its designation as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World to its status as a state icon of Queensland, it represents one of Earth's most magnificent living structures—visible even from space.
Geography
The Great Barrier Reef lies in the Coral Sea along the Queensland coastline of Australia. A wide and notably deep channel separates it from the mainland, and the reef system extends across an immense stretch of ocean, encompassing thousands of individual reefs and numerous islands scattered along its length.
History
The reef owes its existence to billions of tiny coral polyps whose skeletal remains gradually accumulated into the vast structure seen today. Its ecological and scenic value led to its recognition as a World Heritage Site, and it was later added to Australia's own national heritage listing, cementing its status as a place of lasting significance.
Notable features
Remarkably, the reef is large enough to be visible from space, making it the largest structure ever created by living creatures on Earth. It sustains an extraordinary range of marine life and has been celebrated as one of the world's great natural wonders, while also being recognised within Queensland as a defining symbol of the state.
