The answer

Brasília

Brazil · South America

About this place

This modernist marvel rose from the Brazilian Highlands in 1960, a bold presidential vision to shift Brazil's power inland and establish a new national identity. With nearly 3 million residents, it became the country's third-largest city and a thriving economic engine in the Central-West region. Today, it stands as Latin America's wealthiest city by per capita GDP, a testament to the audacious urban planning that transformed a remote plateau into a gleaming federal capital.

Geography

Brasília lies inland on the Brazilian Highlands, within the Central-West region of Brazil, in South America. Its position on this elevated plateau sets it apart from the coastal cities that once dominated the country's urban landscape. The surrounding highland terrain gave planners a relatively open landscape on which to build a wholly new capital, distinct from the older settlements along the Atlantic coast.

History

The city was created at the initiative of President Juscelino Kubitschek, who inaugurated it in April 1960 as part of a plan to move the seat of government away from Rio de Janeiro. This shift was intended to draw national attention toward the country's interior and to establish a modern, purpose-built center of political life. The decision reshaped Brazil's administrative geography and gave the Central-West region new national significance.

Notable features

As Brazil's capital and the heart of the Federal District, Brasília ranks among the country's most important cities. It is the third-largest in population, behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with roughly three million residents. Economically, it stands out across Latin America for having the highest income per person of any major city on the continent, reflecting its role as a center of government and administration.
