- 05Russians call me their national river, and I empty into the Caspian Sea with 8,000-8,500 cubic meters of water per second.
The answer
Volga
About this place
For centuries, I have been the lifeblood of Russia, the longest river in all of Europe and a witness to the rise and fall of empires. The legendary Rus' Khaganate emerged along my banks around 830 AD, making me not just a geographic feature but a cradle of Eurasian civilization. Today, with a discharge greater than any other European river, I remain a national symbol—a liquid thread connecting Russia's heart to the world.
Geography
The Volga runs entirely within Russia, tracing a path from the central part of the country southward before emptying into the Caspian Sea. Rather than reaching an ocean, it drains into this inland sea, making it part of the world's largest self-contained river system. Along its course the river links the central Russian heartland with the country's southern regions, crossing a vast and varied landscape that stretches across much of European Russia.
History
Long before modern Russia took shape, the Volga became a corridor where different Eurasian peoples encountered one another, exchanging goods, ideas and influence along its banks. Around 830 AD, this setting gave rise to the Rus' Khaganate, an early and only loosely documented state associated with the region's Slavic and Norse populations. The river's role as a crossroads shaped the emergence of political and cultural life across the area for centuries afterward.
Notable features
Stretching roughly 3,531 kilometres, the Volga is the longest river on the European continent and drains a basin covering about 1,360,000 square kilometres, the largest of any European river. At its delta it carries an average discharge of between 8,000 and 8,500 cubic metres per second, again the highest of any river in Europe. Widely seen as the national river of Russia, it holds deep symbolic importance for the country's identity.
